BELUGA ARCHIVES
is a project by artist Maryse Goudreau. Spread over twenty years, it will place us in a situation of listening to what the belugas have to pass on to us through the ages.

DANS LE VENTRE DE LA BALEINE / sound art / immersive installation / 2019

(IN THE BELLY OF THE WHALE)

This artwork offers visitors an immersive audio and tactile experience reproducing a deep-sea diver’s sensation of waves made by a beluga. Accompanied by a narrator’s voiceover, the installation creates the impression of one’s own heartbeat being amplified. The heartbeat is gradually intensified to join that of a group of belugas in their breeding area.

REJOUER LA POUPONNIÈRE / BELUGA NURSERY (movement study)
Participative performance | 2018

The term “beluga nursery” first appeared in 2014, as one of these breeding areas in the Saint Lawrence Estuary was being threatened by oil industry activities. This feminine and maternal image called out to the hearts and minds of the population, and became associated with the struggle to help belugas survive. In this performance, Goudreau brings the nursery to life, inciting viewers to continue this important advocacy work, and to protect the endangered beluga.
